Ross Kemp Extreme World Series 5: Mongolia
Now this is something you don’t see every day: far-right Mongolian nationalists driving through the streets of the capital Ulan Bator, dressed as Nazi stormtroopers to celebrate the birthday of Adolf Hitler, with swastikas at every turn. Certainly Ross Kemp looks bemused, but as ever, he’s keen to find out what motivates such extreme behaviour.
Mongolia’s in a bind: the largely Chinese-led mining boom that followed post-Soviet independence has faded, leaving most Mongolians on the bottom of the economic heap. And climate change is having a disastrous effect on traditional herding lifestyles. The nationalists are proud, and very aware that their very existence is on the line. But it’s a twisted sense of history that sees Hitler as the natural successor to Genghis Khan…
In Mongolia, Ross examines the rise in violent far-right vigilante groups, who fear their country’s identity is under threat from foreign influence.
