The Pursuit: 50 years in the Fight for LGBT Rights will air on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 9:00 p.m. on WHYY-TV.  Produced by WHYY, The Pursuit reflects on 50 years in the fight for LGBT rights, since protesters gathered in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1965 and publicly called for an end to discrimination against homosexuals. In this hour-long documentary, LGBT elders recall life in the 1960’s, when “gays” were “hidden in plain sight,” vulnerable to arrest, subjected to psychiatric treatment, fired from jobs and publicly shamed. These poignant recollections introduce four portraits about LGBT life today, exploring what it is like to grow up, to parent, to work and to grow old. A thoughtful look back and an intimate look at the present, The Pursuit reminds us that while the past half-century has seen momentous changes, the fight for LGBT rights continues today.

This project is a collaboration among WHYY, Independence Visitor Center Corporation and Equality Forum. Major support for this project has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, with additional support from The Philadelphia Foundation.
