Information
The natural world has always inspired fascination. Secrets of Nature, a pioneering series exploring animal, plant and insect life, made wondrous worlds and natural processes visible for the first time: sweet peas unfurl in the sunlight, white owls swoop in on their prey, sea life lurks on the ocean floor and moths patiently spin their cocoons.

These films, made by enterprising men and women at the forefront of science and nature filmmaking, developed groundbreaking techniques of time-lapse, microscopic and underwater cinematography. Paving the way for the natural history programmes that we know and love today, these Secrets grant us an entertaining, absorbing and very special glimpse into the mysteries of the natural world.

DEATH – Death by Metal

Arts Documentary hosted by cast themselves, published by Mental Pictures in 2018 – English narration
.
Here comes DEATH’s probing and pulsing rock doc, ‘Death by Metal, pulling back the palm fronds of DEATH’s origins in Altamonte Springs, Florida, and latching a narrative hook into the headstrong Chuck Schuldiner juggernaut for fifteen gratifying if sometimes frustrating years.
As the baby steps become giant leaps, the stable of supporting players grows and continually shines in its own devious light. Excitement grows as Schuldiner, his band, and the world around him evolve, and the music grows ever-more outrageous and bombastic. DEATH’s threat morphs from simple zombie attack to multi-headed mega-monster hellbent on absorbing entire planets. Then suddenly, Chuck is just gone, and the lights go out. The formula for movies about bands dictates that victory is seized from the jaws of mortality in the final act.
This is where things get weird. Chuck Schuldiner perished during the moment of heavy metal’s weakest ebb, and possibly the quietest moment of his own career. The drawling guitar demon in the kitty cat shirt will not rise again to tour county fairs, swap one-liners on late-night TV, and jam with Judas Priest at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But this documentary itself joins reissues, partial reunion tours, and an international reawakening as part of a decade-long ascent for DEATH to its proper place of high dominion.
As you read these words and watch this film, Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH return to glory, and the legend itself becomes an eternal encore.

A record of a twelve-day rite performed by Nambudiri Brahmins in Kerala, south-west India, in April 1975.
.

Culture Documentary hosted by narrator unknown, published by Documentary Educational Resources in 1976 – English narration

.
This film records a 12 day ritual performed by Mambudiri Brahmins in Kerala, southwest India, in April 1975.
This event was possibly the last performance of the Agnicayana, a Vedic ritual of sacrifice dating back 3,000 years and probably the oldest surviving human ritual.
Long considered extinct and never witnessed by outsiders, the ceremonies require the participation of seventeen priests, involve libations of Soma juice and oblations of other substances, all preceded by several months of preparation and rehearsals. They include the construction, from a thousand bricks, of a fire altar in the shape of a bird.
Around 1500 B.C., nomads who spoke an Indo-European language entered India and evolved a complex ritual involving the cults of fire and Soma, a hallucinogenic plant that grew in the Western Himalayas. Their Vedic language developed into Sanskrit, the classical language of Indian civilization. Among the later religions of India, Hinduism accepted and Buddhism rejected the Vedic culture. But both retained many of its ritual forms and recitations. Some of these have traveled all over Asia.
Agni, the fire, is still worshipped with the help of Vedic mantras in Japanese Buddhist temples. In India itself, the preservation of the Agnicayana, though partly explained by the extraordinary conservatism of the Vedic Brahmins and their dedication to the culture of their spiritual ancestors, remains one of the miracles of history.

During the years of the Third Reich, some 1200 films were produced under Joseph Goebbels’ ministry of propaganda. Until now, 40 of them are still banned in Germany.
.

Forbidden Films

History Documentary hosted by cast themselves, published by Zeitgeist Films in 2014 – German narration
also known as
* Verbotene Filme
.
In a fortified, explosion-proof bunker of the German Federal Archives Vault, 2000 film reels made of celluloid, and the highly flammable nitrocellulose are meticulously organised and stored. They are the silent witnesses of a bygone era when more than 1200 films were produced under the Nazi regime, depicting a wide array of topics, ranging from chest-thumping musicals to insidious melodramas about euthanasia itself.
With the help of distinguished experts and German film historians, this is an attempt to provide the viewers with enough stimuli on the debate about the controversial subject of censorship, and the inner conflict about where one draws the line on such a delicate matter.
Nearly seventy years after the end of the Nazi regime, more than 40 of these films remain banned in Germany.
Director Felix Moeller interviews German film historians, archivists and filmgoers in an investigation of the power, and potential danger, of cinema when used for ideological purposes. Utilizing clips from the films and recorded discussions from public screenings (permitted in Germany in educational contexts) in Munich, Berlin, Paris and Jerusalem, Moeller shows how contentious these 70-year-old films remain, and how propaganda can retain its punch when presented to audiences susceptible to manipulation.

Forbidden Movies from the Brothels of Paris

History Documentary hosted by no spoken audio, published by Cav Distribution in 2004 – English narration
also known as
* Les films interdits des maisons closes
.
Pornographic films first appeared in late 19th-century France, a mere two years after the invention of cinematography in 1894.
Known as stag films, the 16mm movies ran for 10-12 minutes and were shown in brothel waiting rooms to prepare customers for their impending sexual encounters.
By the 1920’s, stag films were a staple in both European and American brothels but remained especially prolific in the red light district of Paris, where they screened in famous venues such as the Chabanais, the Panieri Fleuri, the Sphinx, and the Temple de Venus.
“Forbidden Films from the Brothels Of Paris” offers a titillating collection of nine French films from the golden age of stag, the 1920’s:
– The Big Fight
– Trio
– The Dildo
– The Ladie’s Driver
– Loneliness
– At your service, Sir
– The Missie takes a bath
– Miss Dynamite
– Next!
