Pioneers of Television: Series 1
PBS presents a revealing four-part documentary series that talks to nearly 100 stars from television’s formative years. The special covers sitcoms, late-night, variety, and game shows with interviews with the stars and archival clips revealing never-seen-before images as well as timeless clips.

1)  Sitcoms
Interviews with stars from five of the biggest sitcoms in television history (I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Make Room for Daddy, The Andy Griffith Show, and The Dick Van Dyke Show) are combined with comments from actors who worked with them to give a behind-the-scenes look at what made these shows the ground-breaking hits they became

2)  Late Night
The development of late night television as a distinct form of TV entertainment – from local programming to the rise of The Tonight Show with Steve Allen, then Jack Paar, and finally, Johnny Carson. Also chronicled are the programs that tried to compete with Carson’s unique and wildly popular format.

3)  Variety
A chronicle of television’s first successful genre, the variety show – from its beginnings as a continuation of vaudeville and radio entertainment through the many iconic personalities that made it so popular. Experiments in variety show programs and the decline of their popularity in the late 1970s are also examined.

4)  Game Shows
The final installment of the series chronicles the history of television shows based on games of competition among participants – including how the pioneering producers planned the games, the quiz show scandals of the late 50s, and the rise of more inclusive programs in the 1960s.
