Travel Documentary hosted by Penelope Keith , published by Channel 4 in 2016 – English narration
Penelope Keith’s Hidden Villages
Dame Penelope Keith knows a thing or two about village life, having lived in one for almost four decades. But as well as having inside knowledge, she’s also the most charming of companions for these gentle travelogues that peek beneath the surface of our quintessentially British, picturesque villages.
1) Devon and Cornwall
The actress is in Devon and Cornwall as she explores more of the nation’s smallest communities. It’s a land of rugged coastal communities and distinct identities forged over centuries, but also a region visited by five million people each year. Penelope travels to a former silver-mining village, a cliff-edge fishing village, the most exposed theatre in the country, and the small communities near Fowey Harbour.
Penelope learns about life in Cumbria, beginning in Coniston, a village that has tackled everything from copper mining to hill farming and high-class Victorian tourism to the speed records of Donald Campbell. Further north, Penelope meets the community buying its local mountain, before indulging in the unique Cumbrian pursuit of hound trailing.
3) Royal Deeside
The actress travels through Royal Deeside, a remote part of Aberdeenshire, featuring enormous estates served by tiny communities, with five people for every square kilometre. She discovers how important Queen Victoria was in shaping modern Deeside, exploring the royal link to Ballater station, before moving on to Balmoral, where she discovers the secrets of the current Queen’s vegetable patch.
4) Sussex and Kent
The actress’s journey concludes in the South Downs and the Weald of Sussex and Kent, a landscape with which she is very familiar. She aims to locate quintessential village scenes such as the country garden, the war memorial, and cricket on the green, beginning in Sussex, where she spent her schooldays. She relives the Cuckfield Donkey Races, and at Burwash and Batemans she into the life and times of Rudyard Kipling. Plus, boarding a train bound for Kent, she travels through the former hop fields of the Rother Valley, and uncovers the story of the Biddenden maids.
