A fresh new panorama greets passengers every morning as they wake on a train cruising through lush mountains, valleys, forests, and pastures. The Southern Spirit paints a perfect picture of blues and greens as it follows the ancient spine of mountains running up the east coast of Australia: The Great Dividing Range. We’ll discover spectacular lookouts as the magnificent train snakes up and down the landscape, from the gentle wine-growing slopes of The Adelaide Hills, to the craggy outcrops of the Grampians, and the sheer vertical drop-offs of The Blue Mountains. Our jaws will drop as the journey reveals startling stretches of azure coast near the Queensland/New South Wales border, and the majestic curves of the mighty Murray River. We’ll talk to colourful characters who’ve chosen an alternative lifestyle both on and off the train – the chef in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant on board, the lighthouse keeper at Port Macquarie, and the newly converted Buddhist temple in Byron Bay. Our passengers will be wined and dined in some of Australia’s best gourmet food-producing regions; tasting unique delicacies such as smoked emu, native pepper berries, and hand-made cheeses. Our cameras will capture the lifestyles of the farmers and primary producers who have managed to create world-class food and vintage wine from this rich and unusual land. The pioneers of these mountain regions will come to life through our archive film collection, as they tell their tales of hardship and how they depended on the train for survival. Expect the unexpected on the Southern Spirit as we take a star tour at Parkes telescope and wander the African Savannah at Dubbo Zoo.
