Fierce: Series 1
We know from every programme he’s ever made that Steve Backshall’s attitude to lethal wildlife is, essentially, \”How close can I get and still walk away?\” The he-man of natural history will fondle tarantulas and toy with crocs while delivering high-pitched mini-lectures and grinning from ear to ear.
Which is the gist of his first series for ITV – largely a ramped-up version of Deadly 60

1)  Indonesia
Steve makes his way to the wild islands of Indonesia where he is involved in a close call after being chased by the world’s largest lizard, the legendary komodo dragon. He also rescues a three metre venomous king cobra and goes diving in the treacherous seas that surround the islands getting hands on with the world’s most poisonous fish.

2)  Guyana
Steve Backshall travels to Guyana, home to gigantic anaconda, piranha, jaguar and other lethal predators. His adventure begins by flying 340-miles south-west from the capital Georgetown to the remote Central Rupununi rainforest. He also visits a remote stretch of the rainforest on the Mapari River, and searches for an electric eel. Aside from tracking down the bullet ant, so named because one sting feels like being shot, Steve also holds a bird-eating tarantula, and gets a rare sighting of the endangered giant river otter.

3)  Mexico
Steve Backshall heads to Mexico where he gets hands on with a two-metre long rattlesnake, goes swimming with two feisty American crocodiles and dives 25 metres under the sea in search of bull sharks. However, the naturalist runs into trouble when his diving equipment fails and he’s out of air.

4)  Australia
Steve travels to Queensland, Australia, where he tracks down the smallest and most venomous box jellyfish in the world, the irukandji, and gets hands on with a Stingray. He also encounters the cassowary, a giant flightless bird with a lethal kick, and scours the rainforest for two spiders with extraordinary hunting techniques.

5)  Namibia
Naturalist Steve Backshall explores the wildlife in the landscapes of Namibia, southern Africa. He tracks two hungry cheetahs as they go on a hunt, stakes out a carcass to get up close to a group of vultures, and has a close encounter with an agitated lion as he helps a vet at work.

6)  South Africa
Steve Backshall is in the vast nature reserves of South Africa. He goes in search of a pack of rare and endangered wild dogs, and helps capture and tag a magnificent martial eagle. Steve also gets hands on with a venomous spitting cobra and a puff adder as they strike, and risks life and limb to kayak up close to Africa’s most dangerous mammal, the unpredictable hippopotamus.
